A place where time seems to be still, you forget about the rest of tge world when you are at Bertrand Cafè. Everything is so well thought of, decòr, music, every wing speaks to a specific indivudual yet all so tued together in the most elegant maner. When more is more, I love the concept of maximalism that has harmony. Bertrand is more than a cafè restaurant, it’s home and there is no place like home.

The roof top, it was my 1st time being there buh the couple of things I didn’t like, infact I loathed it. 1 The waiters or some of them have their own price tags. When we arrived, 1 gentleman told us that a 6 pack corona was going for R280, and later on, a lady approached us, and she said it was R180. Then we move to the food. This is a real deal breaker for me. Apart from taking aeons to getting your order, the meal was horrible and expensive, compared to their next-door neighbor.

It’s always a great chill vibe when you bring good people around not to meet other people. The service was great but it was just a delay with your food order and you have to always enquire. The server are always around to ensure you that everything is always around the corner and you are around the corner you have to watch out for anything when outside. Mcuh appreciated to the guy who was handling us.

We ate at this lovely gem two nights in a tow while we were in Johannesburg. There were four of us and we ordered different menu items each time so we could all share and try as many of the dishes as possible. Everything was delicious and we were able to sit and enjoy for two hours. The waitstaff was fantastic, very attentive and caring. I’ll definitely return.

I can’t speak to the experience as a restaurant but as a bar/club it was quite alright. It doesn’t feel unsafe and there is quite a strong presence of bouncers. There is more of an older crowd that comes for the downstairs live music experience which is honestly a lot of fun and has a much bigger dance floor than the upstairs section. The DJs upstairs were alright, nothing noteworthy though. The bar tenders served us quickly and we had no issues. Although it’s very casual and not upmarket, I would come here again if I was in the area.

I don’t recommend the pepper steak.

A superb place, with superior live bands, and DJ Steve reads the crowd with meticulous insight. A huge smoke-free downstairs section to dance, eat, and be merry, whilst enjoying the dance floor for 80s and other genres of music. ‘Therapy’ under one roof!

I was here for an event. I came to watch the Muffinz perform, and boy was it worth it! The food is delectable. The service was good. But it’s the music and the views of the sun setting over the Johannesburg skyline that took my breath away. An amazing time!

What a gem .

Had an unexpectedly awesome time at this spot. The vibe is amazing, people and the place is too cool.

They have a great selection of beers, they had 3 different cocktails (managed to get to them all ) and mouth-watering mini-meals, ribs wings, you name it .

On my next visit, I’ll definitely bring in a few friends for a chill. Thanks for an excellent service, and groovy music .

See you soon.

Kitchener’s isn’t just a bar—it’s a cultural landmark and a second home for many of us. I’ve been going there and throwing parties for more than a decade, and it continues to be one of the most authentic, raw, and electric venues in Johannesburg.

From the music to the crowd to the historic setting—everything about Kitcheners carries a vibe you can’t fake. It’s where DJs break boundaries, artists gather, and new memories are made on the dancefloor every weekend. Whether you’re there for a deep house night, hip hop set, or just to hang out and feel the energy, you’re always guaranteed a good time.

There’s something special about how the space brings people together—creatives, locals, out-of-towners—it’s always a diverse mix. And even with all the changes around Braamfontein over the years, Kitcheners has stayed true to its soul.

It’s more than just a bar. It’s history, it’s culture, it’s home. Forever grateful for the memories and many more to come.

Best rooftop bar in Johannesburg! What a place! Perfect view of the skyline, Berlin tech house at its finest and a sound system that doesn’t sound like a tin can. Plus fast, friendly service – yes, there really is such a thing! The drinks? Cold, fairly priced and not cheeky. The atmosphere? Finally a crowd that dances instead of posing with their cell phones. No waiting times, no rip-offs, just a fantastic time all round. Best bar of our bar hopping – if you haven’t been here, you’ve really missed out.

Unfortunately, my room didn’t meet expectations. It was dirty, with issues including a stained mat, dirty bathroom walls, shower floor, and sliding door. Additionally, a water pipe above the bed was a concern. Given the state of the room, I decided to check out immediately.

I hope the hotel will take steps to improve room cleanliness and address maintenance issues to ensure a better experience for future guests.

Overall, this was a stress free stay. The hotel itself is on par with a “fun” stay. The surrounding area, especially at night, is sketchy. If you are a brown or black person, you should be fine. But I would not recommend white folks to walk around the surrounding area at night. The rooms are large, equipped with the basic needs such as towels and shower gel. If you are a neat freak, you will immediately notice the things that need to be touched up, but I do think that is part of the hotel’s charm. Maybe not. The front desk staff were helpful but do not expect them to volunteer information about the city. If you ask, they will share. Otherwise, you will be left to figure it out. I think the place is good for a three to four night stay. Also, be sure to check out the rooftop bar at least once. It gives good city views and there is usually music playing with a DJ at night.

I chose the hotel because it was the best option in terms of price/rating on booking. When I asked around the area among my acquaintances, everyone warned me that it was a very difficult and dangerous area, even the Uber driver who took me from the airport. Once there, I was placed in a huge room, very well furnished, with a queen size bed, excellent linen, an exceptionally spacious bathroom and all the comforts for a 5-day stay. From the first moment, the staff were extremely friendly. After asking me about my plans, they offered me a reservation for that same night in the jazz bar in the basement, the Soweto tour, recommendations for restaurants in Meboneg and other advice about my safety in the city. The breakfast options were very good and the coffee was top notch.
They say that to live life to the full you have to leave your prejudices at the door. Hallmark House is a great experience and you can tell that each and every one of the people who are part of the hotel do their very best to make sure that guests have a good stay.

Very chic boutique hotel located near Maboneng. I arrived at 1am and the receptionist was nice and helpful. Originally assigned room was not ready, but I this was promptly addressed and got even better room with great city view facing Simert road (Point Tower, and Bank Buildings can be seen from balcony). The room was clean and modern. When checking out, I was allowed to store my luggage on site which was nice, as it allowed me to do last minute shopping.

Hotel has a nice pickup and dropoff area in front and most rides around CBD are less than R40. There is a barber shop, clothing/souvenir shop, restaurant and recreational room downstairs. Lounge area is spacious, so one can relax there or the table seating in restaurant/recreational area.

Please note, this Venue isn’t a traditional “open every Saturday kinda night club”. There has to generally be an event taking place.
With that being said, I think the premises can be rented for private functions.

We three all had pizzas at lunchtime on a very quiet Thursday so made our own atmosphere. Food and drinks and service were great but I didn’t like to smoking allowed in the bar area. Probably worth a return visit in the evening when there’s music and more vibes. 1929 says something about longevity of this landmark establishment.

Representative of better times, one may find themselves here if they’re actively seeking a bit of nostalgia. The walls are adorned with past headlines as well as bands and famous races that have occurred in and around JHB. The feel is homely. A rare gem

How many years have I had beers here? How many people did I meet here for drinks and a pizza?

Have a Tueaday half price pizza special. (R10 extra for a take away box)

The beer is still ice cold and the vibe is still cool. Service is very friendly and good.

As with most bars, smoking permitted (don’t let the no smoking sign fool you).

Be aware when parking (as everywhere in SA).

Do look at the free beer massacre and the “the situation is vrot with danger” signs.

Lekker vegetarian options for the pizza

Interesting venue with very unique decor and a nice vibe. Seems to be quite safe with guarded car parks outside and security at the entrance, despite being close to the city centre.

Our evening was a bit disappointing though, as we struggled to find the actual car park and there were no proper signs to show direction. The sound inside with the show was terrible and you have to stand really close to the stage to hear anything. They sold way too many tickets for the seating available, and we found many spots where a group of 4 would take a table that could easily seat 10 people. This caused a bunch of people to have to stand and nobody at the back could then see anything.

Make sure you type ‘The Fox’ and not fox street… Yoh I was lost in central town… Eventually figured out the event is not on fox street. Anyway the area is much more secured and the scene is old town meets refurb vibes…pretty cool if you like markets etc
