It’s always a great chill vibe when you bring good people around not to meet other people. The service was great but it was just a delay with your food order and you have to always enquire. The server are always around to ensure you that everything is always around the corner and you are around the corner you have to watch out for anything when outside. Mcuh appreciated to the guy who was handling us.

What a fun place. Amazing friendly staff.. delicious 2 for 1 cocktails before 7pm a brilliant shared seafood platter that had an amazing array of flavours and sauces.
Do yourself a favour and pop in. Get a cocktail
recommendation..try some of the food. You won’t be disappointed… Jazz on Wednesdays and karaoke on Fridays add to the fun.

Had an awesome Comedy night… Only thing I had a problem with was the waiter who brought all my beers open found it very disturbing as the beer acid was being exposed… but will give it another chance
Omphile Phile Letsapa

This place has quite the chill vibe in the middle of a summery work day. The drinks are tasty and the staff on-point. A Melville Must-do.

I had a great experience ♥️ the staff was top notch, keep it to all the staff
Celumusa Sambo

We had to attend a squash tournament held here over the weekend. it was the first time we had visited this establishment. it is well maintained with beautiful mani
cured gardens.
Whilst waiting, we decided to grab a meal at the restaurant…
I was not that hungry, so I opted for some sushi.
The restaurant area is beautiful and open with views of the open course ahead. There was an event that was taking place on the other side (looked like a wedding) and there was a kiddies birthday in the dining area.
Looks like a Great place to celebrate a birthday because of the stunning location.
It was a pleasant surprise to see many vegetarian as well as vegan dishes on the menu including South Indian food.
The ladies bathroom is a whole topic on its own. let’s just say, it was impressive
Will definitely visit again
Chantal chelliah

Beautiful environment that’s great for kids. The restaurant serves delicious food that’s great value. The facilities are well kept and all the staff are friendly. There are Paddle courts, croquet lawns, a cricket field, tennis courts, a swimming pool, gym and more. It’s a lovely place to walk around with fragrant roses and manicured gardens.
Paul

Great atmosphere and a breath of fresh air just outside the Johannesburg city centre. Lovely grounds for children to play and good food.
Mokgere

The service at the restaurant is super slow and indifferent. Wait ages for just a drink. Food was OK but by the time it came I was ready to go home. Pity because the venue is beautiful with lovely wooded surrounds and lawns.

Customer Reviews
They tried to scam me, presumably because I am a tourist. Lady with a hat followed me in from the street into the bar. I had to flag the bartender for his attention because he was sitting on his phone behind the bar. They didn’t have vodka. Bartender specifically asked if I wanted a double I explicitly said no. Bill came back from lady with a hat double charging me. I asked about the charge and she said I ordered a double. She said she couldn’t take one drink back because it was already mixed. After being caught they resolved the issue. I saw them behind the bar later pointing and giggling. I work too hard for my money to be played with, especially when a double shot is not an actual double shot. I can’t recommend this place
John Ray

Great on Sundays, All gays in Jozi come to party at shakers on Sunday, I had a great time
Rodgers Palai

Great place with friendly staff. Place has affordable food and drinks, they need to improve their restrooms … it was a nightmare, sink doesn’t work, door handles were broken and if you were to find toilet paper it’d be on the floor.
Also … great music
Andile Munatsi

Friends invited me to meet up with them over at Shakers on a Saturday night. Not the best experience. It was so full I had people stepping on my toes several times, it was impossible to dance. Paid 50 bucks for entrance, music is great and loud, drinks are not too expensive, and there’s plenty of pretty ladies. Bouncers are rude though.
Themba Khanye

The bar is lit. It gives a great weekend experience. The VIP section, rooftop and bar is well structured and has class. The tables have enough space between them to allow dancing for “shakers” in the mood. They serve a wide variety of alcohol at reasonable prices. It’s one of the hyped places in Maboneng

Customer Reviews
I can’t speak to the experience as a restaurant but as a bar/club it was quite alright. It doesn’t feel unsafe and there is quite a strong presence of bouncers. There is more of an older crowd that comes for the downstairs live music experience which is honestly a lot of fun and has a much bigger dance floor than the upstairs section. The DJs upstairs were alright, nothing noteworthy though. The bar tenders served us quickly and we had no issues. Although it’s very casual and not upmarket, I would come here again if I was in the area.
Gess Rolo

Great vibe, lovely scenery, good service…good food…
If you’re hungry I would recommend adding another patty to your burger.
The chips and veggies were yummy.
I don’t recommend the pepper steak.
All round, a good experience
OBSERVATION STATION

Some nights are better than others apparently but I’ve only experienced good ones. Live music or disco upstairs cater for all ages. Unruly elements are swiftly escorted outside and safety is a first priority.
Tommy Steyn

A superb place, with superior live bands, and DJ Steve reads the crowd with meticulous insight. A huge smoke-free downstairs section to dance, eat, and be merry, whilst enjoying the dance floor for 80s and other genres of music. ‘Therapy’ under one roof!
FiFi Fourie

Had a blast at the Tinderella party (and good way to meet singles thank you). Place was pumping and I was surprised how attentive the staff and owners were, despite the crowd. I had the steak, was perfectly cooked and served with delish veg. See you at the next one

Whiskey , beer, wine and good pub food, what more can you ask for. Very attentive staff making sure your glass is always full. Good music played, so perfect place for a group in the main street of Melville
S M

Always a good vibe, great music, superb food and friendly service. Great venue with a wonderful soul – occasional live music and awesome DJ residencies too. Check out Thursday nights for a good rock vibe and end of the week shenanigans
Ruairi

Great food, great music, great vibe. A gem in the heart of Melville. Get your fill of craft, beer, whisky and adult drinks, some great food and eclectic music. A definite must top try is the house whisky infused with cinnamon – Hell Fire
bongai zamchiya

The service was great. The food took quite a long time to make and some ingredients were missing due to there not being stock. The flavours of the food were wonderful, maybe just an off-day in Hell’s Kitchen, usually a much better experience than the last. Come on guys, don’t let lockdown get you, you’re better than this!

Copyright ©️ blackjohannes. Pictures as is, not edited or altered. Best place in Melville to go to. Mostly cool and funky people hangs out there. It is a low light place which create a love ambience. A few couches to sit on and tables. There is an outside seating are and a small “courtyard” are for people to chill. The music is great, but a bit loud at times to have a good conversation. A nice size bar, with a good selection. The selection is obviously geared to serve a specific market. Multicultural so it makes it a great place to hang out. Wish the “smoking libary area” was for non smokers. Such a nice chill place on the couches. Off Street parking. Efficient service with good choice of waiters and barmen. Keep it up. Melville, especially 7th Street still has a problem with cellphone theft and petty crime with car guards a nuisance and dark areas an issue. You never feel safe in the streets walking. BEWARE OF CELLPHONE THEFT, VALUABLES. IT HAPPENS EVERYWHERE IN MELVILLE, ESPECIALLY 7TH Str, 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th Ave.

We three all had pizzas at lunchtime on a very quiet Thursday so made our own atmosphere. Food and drinks and service were great but I didn’t like to smoking allowed in the bar area. Probably worth a return visit in the evening when there’s music and more vibes. 1929 says something about longevity of this landmark establishment.
Peter Tobin

One of the few old school spots left in South Africa. Well preserved and honestly, a rare gem. I’d buy this spot if I had the dough
Representative of better times, one may find themselves here if they’re actively seeking a bit of nostalgia. The walls are adorned with past headlines as well as bands and famous races that have occurred in and around JHB. The feel is homely. A rare gem
Leora Hart

Best pizza in town! Friendly service and great atmosphere! Please support this local business. Tuesdays are half price pizza (for sit-down only) and quiz night, too, where you can win a meal voucher.
Roane Swindon

How many years have I had beers here? How many people did I meet here for drinks and a pizza?
Have a Tueaday half price pizza special. (R10 extra for a take away box)
The beer is still ice cold and the vibe is still cool. Service is very friendly and good.
As with most bars, smoking permitted (don’t let the no smoking sign fool you).
Be aware when parking (as everywhere in SA).
Do look at the free beer massacre and the “the situation is vrot with danger” signs.
Lekker vegetarian options for the pizza
Sam

While it is old. The food especially pizza is excellent and the manager Bryan is amazing. Always helpful and welcoming

Good restaurant and work space in the CBD.
Be transported to a near forgotten time surrounded by a familiar city undergoing improvement. A wonderful piece of Joburg heritage!
Andile Skosana

What a welcome party in the time-honored Rand Club with its fine British colonial charm. I came there with Hawaiian shirt and shorts – a fashion sacrilege that was initially punished with withering looks. But our irresistible charm opened the doors of this venerable establishment, which was once co-founded by the controversial figure Cecil Rhodes. The bar is an impressive 31.4 meters long – an architectural accolade for anyone who wants to get drunk after a long day at work. And the “holy halls” in which The Man with the Golden Gun was filmed? If they even exist ( ), then only for the chosen few – or for charming philistines in Hawaiian looks. Thank you very much for that! And…The burger was, surprisingly, the best so far in South Africa – in Berlin it would be average, but here it was a culinary accolade. Conclusion: wonderfully decadent, absurdly elitist – a must for every daring rascal
Tilman Benecke

Great old world experience, loved the appeal of the Club and its historical connections||However, facilities were somewhat lacking||1.|Basement has “billiards room”|Book store, but no leisure facilities|2.|Travellers now demand a different experience, the basement is steeped in the past Needs a pool/ sauna/ steamroom||Liked the rooms, but no Aircon, had to use fan and open windows.||Paying 1550 rand a night would demand better.|Place needs some money spent on it.
Cedricthefrog

The Rand Club has lost none of its old world charm. The decor takes you back to a bygone era. It’s simply magical. The food was out of this world. I would highly reccomend this venue for you next supper or lunch

Interesting venue with very unique decor and a nice vibe. Seems to be quite safe with guarded car parks outside and security at the entrance, despite being close to the city centre.
Our evening was a bit disappointing though, as we struggled to find the actual car park and there were no proper signs to show direction. The sound inside with the show was terrible and you have to stand really close to the stage to hear anything. They sold way too many tickets for the seating available, and we found many spots where a group of 4 would take a table that could easily seat 10 people. This caused a bunch of people to have to stand and nobody at the back could then see anything.
Riekert Strydom

Make sure you type ‘The Fox’ and not fox street… Yoh I was lost in central town… Eventually figured out the event is not on fox street. Anyway the area is much more secured and the scene is old town meets refurb vibes…pretty cool if you like markets etc

The Beach Rivonia is one of those places that instantly makes you feel like you’re on a mini vacation. The vibe is lively yet laid back, with stunning decor that gives off tropical beach energy right in the middle of Sandton. The food is fantastic. Went out with my friends and had an absolute blast. The cocktails were amazing and the chicken wings were so delicious with their own sauce. The dj is really good and plays for the crowd. The bartenders were so friendly. This will definitely be my go to spot from now onwards.
Aryana Maharaj

Had the best time with my family and friends. The vibe and dj was so good. My bartender Arii was so friendly, she even bought me a shot.
Yashika Singh

Elizabeth is a simply extraordinary hostess. Attentive, friendly, funny, gracious and graceful. Her professionalism and personality made the event special. Food was good, venue is good, but this lady is the star of the show. We will return hoping to find her there again.
Heinrich Crouse

The service is extremely slow, it was just bad from when we walked in, had to wait for over 5 minutes for someone to notice us and get a table! Just to get our first drinks a whole 15 minutes wait and it wasn’t even full, there were about 5 tables as they had just opened! I have nothing good to say about it! Orders take ages, waters are not engaged, not available, when you need something you must go look for a waiter as they didn’t come check in from time to time! The last straw, they didn’t have tabasco sauce oh any hot sauce for the wings!

The best BAO buns I’ve had. The atmosphere and the culture is such a vibe. Waiters were funky and helpful. The detailed cocktails were OUT OF THIS WORLD with such a creative twist. Would recommend for first dates ngl … lol
Zia Steyn

SinTax is an intimate gem for cocktail lovers, offering a perfect blend of ambiance and exceptional drinks. The cozy, low-lit setting creates an ideal atmosphere for a relaxing evening, while the friendly and attentive staff elevate the experience with their warm service. I sampled four different drinks, each crafted with care and packed with flavor. Every sip was a testament to the mixology expertise on display. SinTax doesn’t just impress with its cocktails—it also delivers on the food front. The pork bao bun was a delightful bite, soft and packed with savory flavors that paired perfectly with the drinks. The Korean fried chicken wings were equally impressive, with just the right amount of crispiness and a kick of spice that made them irresistible. Whether you’re seeking a vibey spot for a date or simply want to enjoy a creative cocktail, SinTax is a must-visit for anyone looking for a high-quality, relaxed bar experience.

Sin+Tax has become one of my favourite places to visit in Joburg! The staff are all so vibe-y and friendly and the bartenders seriously know what they are doing! These are hands down the best drinks I have had in South Africa so far! Definitely worth every Rand spent!

We had the pleasure of having our year end function here last week and I cannot fault the place. The service from everyone (from the doormen to the manager) was 1st class. I have not had a single complaint from anyone in my team and the team at Sin+Tax made sure that every person in my team had the best time and were taken care of at all times. The food was incredible!! Thank you team Sin+Tax, we love you! From everyone at Freshive!

If you’re looking for a bar that combines amazing food, unique cocktails, and an unbeatable vibe, look no further than Sin+Tax. We visited on a Thursday evening for their jazz night, and it was an unforgettable experience.
A special shoutout to Té, who went above and beyond to ensure our family had a special experience. Her attentiveness and thoughtful recommendations for drinks and food elevated the evening to another level.
Sin+Tax is a gem of a spot with great energy and warmth. Whether you’re a foodie, a cocktail enthusiast, or just someone looking for good vibes, this is the place to be. Highly recommended!
