We went to Booysens SPCA yesterday. Staff were friendly, however many kennels were filthy, full of dog shit that had not been cleaned for days. Poor dogs were jumping around in their own faeces. No open space for dogs to get a chance to run around.
Yvonne Riester

These people working at JHB Spca ,clearly does not care about animals. They don’t answer the phones and when they eventually do ,they disconnect it in your ear.Have laid a complaint with inspector Diali for a tied up ,immaciated dog .He cheked up once on the dog then the owner took the poor dog somewhere else and that was the end of it .Nothing further has been done.
Herman Steyn

The staff was kind, helpful and assisted with our German Shepherd Max with his final moment with empathy and grace. We thank you dearly.

The animals are lovely and friendly. However the unprofessional, unfriendly and lazy staff ruin the experience as they would rather have conversations with each other than actually help out. they also refuse to work past 12:30 despite closing at 1 . they surely ruin the adoption experience and could potentially be preventing animal from getting homes due to their laziness.
Aaliyah Ganchi

The gentlemen that work at this SPCA are professional, and friendly. They responded promptly when we required assistance with our dogs. I’ll always be grateful to them

Had a lovely happy morning there. It’s so shady and peaceful. Small enough so you can see and explore everything at a leisurely pace, but big enough so that there is plenty of space for the kids to run and play. The bunnies are so sweet and friendly, I loved the cuddles. But there are also so many other animals to also see. The staff were friendly and you can see they care, the animals are loved. We will be back
K Swart

A lovely outing for everyone. Going during the week meant it was peaceful and had more time with the animals. There are more than just bunnies, there were also sheep, pigs, big and small tortoises and probably my favourite, miniature goats You do get a bucket to feed the animals with and the bunnies appreciate the food so much it is easy to snap a picture with them.
Zoe Steyn

A great place to visit with young kids, plenty of shade for picnics & a nice open ground for little ones to run around, The staff is friendly & the animals seem to be living their best lives. My family had a great time here .
Kagisho Motloutsi

A great and safe place for rescued farm animals. Staff are friendly and the animals are in loving care. Great fun interactive activity for the whole family and suitable for all ages. Price is kids R50 includes food bucket to feed the animals. R50 for adults and R20 adults for the extra food bucket to feed the animals. You can feed any farm animal and there is a big bunny pen that you can interact with the bunnies and guinea pigs, while feeding them. There is also place for kids to play on the jungle gyms and plenty seating places. Located on the Observatory Sports club premises with loads of safe parking. There is also a nursery. Very easy to get to.
Jayne Moyles Plint

This is NOT a haven for animals! It’s NOT a rescue!!! A dead sheep and a goat writhing and bleating and dying before our eyes in mud and puddles was the most awful trauma imaginable! The owner arguing with the SPCA who we called made the whole thing even worse. It’s not her first incident either. The SPCA have issued writren warnings before to no avail. What this place does to their animals is heinous!!!!

So awesome walking the dogs. Staff are so friendly, i wish they were all adopted.
Janine Gillespie

I have been sharing Paws R US (SA) postd for many years. When it came time for us to adopt a new companion for us all, Paws was our first choice.
The people who work for Paws daily and at the most horrendous hours to try and ensure every animal is homed responsibly and to put each dog in the perfect home, are tireless.
This group often work under extremely difficult circumstances with minimal financial resources and yet they show up every day and do their absolute best.
We had seen a few dogs that we were keen on meeting but Toto really grabbed our hearts. His face just spoke to us. The meet and greet and the time spent ensuring that our home alongside our very reactive Jack Russell girl was the perfect fit for little Toto.
The time and hard work paid off. Toto and Kayla are the best of friends and they play for hours on end.
Thank you Tanya, Charmain and Chantelle for every minute you put into those precious souls who have been let down by humans every day.
Wendy van Blerk

I left a comment on thier page regarding a blanket donation. I mentioned those blankets are not suitable as there are single use and harmful in a number of ways & there are more appropriate ones to buy. My comment was deleted & the OP was editing to say exactly what I just mentioned. I was then blocked from commenting on their page. Dick move admin person.

We are very much disgusted with Paws R Us. On Saturday we drove from Krugersdorp to Riversands where Paws R Us is located. We told the lady assisting us that we are interested in 3 dogs namely Frisky, Harper and Angel. Frisky was brought to us first. We immediately told the lady that we’re going to adopt Frisky and don’t need to see the other two dogs. We also informed the lady that we have a Labrador X with a German Shepherd and a little Dachshund X with a Pug. She said that there should not be a problem between the dogs and we even got the phone number of the lady dealing with the adoptions. My husband called her from the premises, in front of another guy and in the presence of Frisky and told her that we want to adopt Frisky. She emailed us the adoption papers as we were leaving the premises. Back at home, my husband completed the forms and emailed it back to her. By Wednesday morning we still did not hear anything and my husband phoned to enquire what’s the holdup. Her phone just rang unanswered till voicemail, so he left a message. Later he received a WhatsApp message, not even a call back, stating that the adoption was unsuccessful because “Ons rescues slaap buite terwyl hulle wag vir nuwe huise. Dit en die feit dat hulle meestal geïsoleer is van mense is vir ons baie swaar. Een van ons vereistes (drome) is dat honde moet binne die huis leef. Hulle wêrelde is reeds so klein.” So because Frisky, who is used to be outside for +/- 4 years can’t be adopted by us is because in honesty it was stated on the adoption papers that she will be outside. Do we now have to let our other 2 dogs also stay in the house to be equal to all dogs? At NO time or ANYWHERE was it mentioned or indicated that animals must be inside the house. It was also stated “Dis ‘n nie onderhandelbare vereiste by ons.” Frisky is a medium size Collie X with long hair. Such a large dog should not be confined to the house but should roam free outside. It was further mentioned “Frisky is ook geniepsig met klein honde.” It was never mentioned on the add, but mentioned on another dog’s add (as photo’s of Zoey and Frisky indicated). Now, I ask what’s the purpose of a ‘meet and greet’ between dogs? I thought that it was to see if the dogs get along. No such arrangement was made, nor was our premises checked. It is clear that Paws R Us are not serious in having dogs adopted. They have raised an expectation and not committed to it. We will NEVER again support them!
Hermann van Rooyen

Volunteer at Paws R Us, took each of dog for a walk during the day. Anyone who loves dog and that is a place where you can have a company, walking and donation. Definitely going back again!

We went to the SPCA about 2 weeks ago. We went because our cat was about to give birth but she’s not actually our cat. She’s a stray. We wanted her to give birth there because there is a 3-year-old at my house and we felt it would be difficult to keep him away from the kittens. Anyway, they don’t do that. We had to bring the cat back home and she delivered here on the 14th. She had six kittens. Sadly one passed away. I thought cats could get pregnant immediately after giving birth. This is not true. Cats cannot get pregnant while they are nursing. You also cannot sterilize a cat while she is nursing her babies. It will dry up her milk. I didn’t know this either. We took the cat in today to get it sterilized and we’re told of this news. We will return in 6 weeks to get the cat sterilized. The staff was very friendly and the guard outside made sure to keep a mental note of who had arrived first. Which was nice because people were everywhere. Oh, side note, when we got there there was a sign on the gate that said they’d be opening an hour later. They still managed to get us in before that delaying hour. Well done!

DONT TAKE UR DOG TO SOWETO PIMVELLE SPCA.Heres why?.I always use to take my dogs in Lenasia Nd my dog would always get better. The SPCA people of pimvelle in Soweto don’t know what they are doing.I had a boerbul in 2020 Nd she was sick but she was still doing fine, noting major .I took her to the vet in pimvelle as soon as I got home my dog started breathing heavy Nd eventually died.
Today I took my 5 month old puppy who was also sick but she could walk Nd everything.
The vet said it’s parvo Nd that the dog will be okay because I got it early to the vet.The gave me procedures on how to feed the dog Nd that which I followed but 2minutes later I see my dog dead.I HAD NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH ANY OTHER SPCA ACCEPT THE ONE IN PIMVELLE SOWETO.
All I want to say is that what u do to others people Nd god creatures will come back to u 10 times more
They don’t know what they doing.
Thank u

Excellent well priced dog grooming service, highly recommended! I have two very happy miniature Yorkies.
Robert William Edison Bell

From the first time I visited this place I was pleased. The next time, I dropped my little ones off. When I picked them up, I had to go back inside of the building. My little one got inside of the building before me, that’s how I now they enjoyed themselves. I will be using The Puppy Palace again, especially when I got out of town. Thank you for looking after my little ones.
Tia Jackson

The impact Puppy Palace has had on my rescued timid shy dog is amazing, my dog is now more confident than ever because of going there for the past few weeks. The staff and owner are all very friendly and welcoming.
Ling-yi Huang

Having used the service prior last year, this year unfortunately was an unpleasant experience. From ineffective and incomplete communication regarding pick up times to an unpleasant groomer who became frustrated that my pup had made a wee in his excitement to sloppy grooming, nails still too long, coat not as shiny. Unfortunately, will no longer be recommending the service or making use of it. Owner proceeded to call and be rude to me for keeping an honest review further proving his inability to take feedback. Really unprofessional service. It is recommended to take your pups elsewhere as a company not willing to take feedback is not one to make use of.

Such a great community driven initiative to help the animals
Adopt an Furbaby if you can, or donate food, blankets and anything necessary

We adopted “Pirate”, the 1 eye pup on the 23rd December 2020. Michelle did the home check and our pup, now named Zimba has settled into our home alongside our other adopted, rescued dogs. He is such a cute dog. Love him.
My advice: adopt a rescue, never buy a dog! #adoptdontshop

Love of dogs is awesome, they way the take care of them. We are gratefull
Lindiwe Buthelezi

Essentially an animal vet practice that has opened itself to the community around it. Educational and supportive it allows people to bring their animals in and in turn they get educated about animal care etc. I think it depends largely on donations to do the hundreds of sterilizations and medical care.

Today we adopted Zoro. Beautiful pup. The people were friendly, helped us out quickly. Gave Zoro his shot and answered all questions we had. They were professional, helpful and friendly. Thank you, CLAW!

I called Joy as the website says call instead of message. We lost our cat baby who was with us for 10 years and I wanted to gift her with money for the amazing work that I thought she did for rescue cats. She was rude, did not give me a chance to talk or explain why I had contacted her and also put the phone down on me. I was so shocked and sent her a message to let her know that God must bless her for the amazing work that she portrays she does and that I would consider sponsoring. Very sad indeed to be treated so badly without getting a word in and at the end of the day, the cats she looks after would benefit. I pray that God can make miss Joy a bit more joyous and kind. The cats will certainly benefit from it
Verushka Hansrajh

Please stay away from Joy. My wife just called Joy to enquire about a Percian cat. After watching her videos on Facebook, we thought she will be a friendly and caring person. Oh boy, were we wrong. She is rude and has an attitude problem. I wonder how she gets any of her cats adopted. Realy Joy, get your atitude in order or give the business to someone who loves cats and know how to treat people.
Morne Van der Merwe

I would give a zero star if I could. This woman Joy is by far one of the rudest humans I have come across on the face of the earth. She should change her name from Joy to Misery. She sounds mentally unstable and urgently needs professional specialist help. She sounds like she has serious psychological issues. Miserable old woman.
AK

I Called Joy to make some enquiries about kittens. She is extremely rude and didn’t give me a chance to talk. She kept yelling “go away” and screaming on the phone. Horrible attitude I don’t know why she’s allowed to take care of cats if she’s such an awful abrupt human being. Poor cats I hope they’re okay.
Sana Isane

Very poor service, I phoned and had a few enquiries and I was called an idiot over the phone and the phone was put down in my ear before hearing about my enquiries . Disgusting service. And this joy woman is just pure one of the rudest people ive ever spoken to.

Frequently asked questions about pet adoption centers in Johannesburg
What types of animals are typically available for adoption?
Pet adoption centers in Johannesburg usually have a variety of animals looking for loving homes. This often includes dogs and cats, but you may also find other creatures like rabbits, birds, or even the occasional reptile. It’s always best to contact the specific center to inquire about their current available animals.
How much does it cost to adopt a pet?
Adoption fees vary depending on the animal, its age, and the specific adoption center. Generally, fees help cover the costs of caring for the animal before adoption, including medical treatment, vaccinations, and spaying/neutering.
Are there any age restrictions on adopting a pet?
Age restrictions for pet adoption often depend on the individual center's policies. Some centers may require adopters to be at least 18 years old, while others may have different criteria. It’s always best to check with the specific center regarding their age requirements.
Do I need to provide references when applying to adopt?

What is the adoption process like?
The adoption process typically involves completing an application, undergoing a screening interview, and possibly a home visit. The center will assess your suitability as an adoptive parent and make sure you can provide a suitable environment for the animal.
Do adoption centers offer support after adoption?
Yes, many adoption centers provide ongoing support to adopters. This may include training advice, veterinary referrals, and behavioral guidance. They want to ensure a successful transition for both the pet and its new family.

The availability of specific breeds varies greatly depending on the center. Some centers may specialize in certain breeds, while others have a more diverse range of animals. It's always best to contact the center directly to inquire about their current stock of dogs and cats.
Can I visit the adoption center with my children?
Most adoption centers welcome visits from families, including children. However, it’s important to supervise children closely around animals and teach them how to interact respectfully. Contact the center beforehand to confirm their policies regarding children.
What is the best way to find a pet adoption center in Johannesburg?
You can use online search engines or directory websites to locate pet adoption centers in Johannesburg. Many animal welfare organizations and charities also operate adoption programs. Reading reviews and testimonials from other adopters can help you find a reputable center.
