I’m a visiting academic at UJ and have been a member for about a week. The studio is very clean and neat, and I love that I can come in to use equipment independently. But unfortunately, I haven’t found all your staff to be “friendly” or professional. Today (Saturday) when you close at 1 pm, a male trainer (who I’ve seen training people over the week) was behind the desk. I greeted him and his response was “We close at 1”. That’s it. While I understood that it’s probably necessary to remind clients that you close early on Saturdays, it’s the lack of politeness in his response that struck me. By 12:50pm, he began shutting blinds (those in front of my face as well — I was on the exercise bike); and at 12:53pm, shut all the lights off and just stood by the door. I looked at the studio clock to make sure my phone and the clock were in synch; they were.
While this may seem like a minor thing – being pressured to leave 10 mins before the studio officially closes – it’s the overall attitude and surliness of this trainer that put me off. No one needs to be chirpy all the time (and yes, everyone wants to get out of work asap on a Saturday), but this trainer’s entitled-full-of-himself-dude attitude was made so obvious. It seems so out of place in a Pilates/ wellness studio, given your “wellness” ethos. I’m happy to continue on as a client for this month, but these are the things that make a really poor early impression on clients, as they weigh their fitness options.
